Akkermansia, a highly beneficial bacteria in your large intestine, plays a crucial role in maintaining gut health and should constitute about 10% of the gut microbiome. However, it is absent in many individuals, likely due to inadequate mitochondrial function and resultant oxygen leakage in the gut. Widespread use of antibiotics can also disrupt the microbiome by killing both beneficial and harmful bacteria, leading to a dominance of pathogenic bacteria which produce harmful endotoxins.
Akkermansia muciniphila is a unique bacterium enriched in the mucus layer of the gut.1,2 Higher levels of Akkermansia in the body have been linked to improved metabolism and glucose metabolism, along with improved cardiovascular health, while lower levels have been associated with excess body fat.3*
Akkermansia muciniphila, unlike many of the known probiotic species, is a unique commensal microbe inhabiting the mucus layer, where it can interact closely with host intestinal epithelial cells and immune cells. The gut mucus layer forms a natural defense barrier, and its integrity is vital for maintaining the intestinal health of the host.1 Akkermansia muciniphila is known to utilize mucins (key components of mucus) as nutrient and energy sources and produce beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).2 It is believed that through reinforcing gut barrier function, Akkermansia muciniphila supports various bodily functions, such as energy, lipid, and glucose metabolism as well as immune responses.3

Clinical Study Data
In a 3-month study, involving 32 overweight/obese, insulin resistant participants, the effects of pasteurized Akkermansia, live Akkermansia, and placebo were examined in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
The results revealed that pasteurized Akkermansia demonstrated significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, decreased insulin levels, reduced plasma total cholesterol, and decreased body weight, fat mass, and hip circumference when compared to the placebo group.
In contrast, the live version did not exhibit statistically significant changes compared to placebo.
The study results suggest that incorporating pasteurized Akkermansia along with lifestyle modifications for at least 3 months, may offer a multi-faceted approach to improving metabolic health, reducing cardiovascular risk factors, and supporting overall well-being, especially in individuals with overweight/obesity and insulin resistance.
